2. Project Teringai (Sabah), 4-17 August 2014

Inspire Teringai ’14 is guaranteed to be an experience of a lifetime that you’ll find hard to forget. A dynamic combination of adventure, giving back to the community and discovering Borneo’s nature beauty makes Teringai the IDEAL summer volunteering program. For two weeks, volunteers will stay together in a traditional village house surrounded by greenery and a picturesque view of the sea and starry nights. Volunteers will spend their time teaching English to the children of SK Temuno Darat and conducting interactive activities. This year’s project also emphasises on health care whereby volunteers will be promoting healthy lifestyle choices to the children and villagers. In between all the hard work, volunteers will get an opportunity to enjoy themselves during the weekends. What are you waiting for?

Apply now for a chance to INSPIRE and to be INSPIRED this summer. Teringai 2014 awaits you.

Are you the one we are looking for?

If you are passionate towards issues like children’s education and inequalities in rural areas then Inspire Teringai is the project for you. We are looking for volunteers that are flexible and dedicated team players. We highly appreciate volunteers who are creative and exhibit good communication skills. Due to the geographic location of the project, we are looking for volunteers who are adaptable to unexpected challenges and situations. Project ‘Add Your Service’ (Check out the FAQs HERE!)

Project ‘Add Your Service’ aims to organise a series of community service activities to explore the gritty reality of the unseen people who are currently in the jobs that are unappreciated by Malaysian society. Throughout the course of the project, volunteers will experience first-hand the daily routine of blue-collared workers (one job per day), such as those of waiters or waitresses, food distributors to the homeless, workers in recycling center, baggage handlers in airport and so on who render their services everyday behind the scene. At the end of the project, we aim to eliminate negative perception towards blue-collared workers and to appreciate the contributions of these unsung heroes to our society.

Are you the one we are looking for?

We are looking for students who are driven, energetic and able to take up everyday challenges. As volunteers might sometimes be required to work under unpleasant conditions, you will need to have a reasonable level of endurance, both physically and mentally. The right aptitudes and skills for working in different and perhaps difficult socioeconomic settings are what we seek for. Apart from that, the capacity for teamwork and effective communication skills are also important. A good command of English would be an additional bonus as we will be looking into publishing articles by volunteers who take part in the project.

APPLY HERE before spaces are filled up as we recruit on a rolling basis! (it is very competitive so we hope you take your application seriously)

If you’ve been deliberating and are still unsure, I can assure you that you will not regret this decision. So come and join us and be a Charisman!

UKECharisma Committee Recruitment 2013/2014

Leave a comment Standard

Always wanted to make a difference on a larger, more sustainable scale? Love people, challenges and have a strong commitment to inspiring change? Then maybe the UKECharisma Executive Committee is for you! Read on to find out more about the different roles and positions available.

UKECharisma is a volunteering network set up by students, for students (any student studying at a university or an affiliate (ie twinning) is welcome to join) to come to Malaysia to volunteer during the summer. It aims to encourage student volunteerism by providing a reliable and sustainable framework for community service and leadership projects. 2013 was a roaring success for us, with 2 projects executed in Sabah and Kuala Lumpur which saw over 30 volunteers creating transformational change in schools and students’ lives! This year we also had a collaboration with Cambridge University Malaysian Society to help run workshops on applying to Cambridge, and had training from Teach from Malaysia.

We are currently looking for the following positions to take over the helm for the 2013/2014 year.

For the positions offered below, please kindly note the following criteria:

1) Must be a Malaysian student currently at a UK university (aside for the role of Malaysian Liaison Officer) able to provide proof of student status. It doesn’t matter what level of study you are (Degree, Masters, PhD etc).

2) Must be able to speak/write good English.

3) Please be advised that your application for the positions offered requires full commitment throughout the year especially during the summer (July and August). If you think you won’t be available to fully commit during the summer holidays, please specify this in your application. Ability to commit is a huge factor in our selection as many initially supportive individuals have pulled out before due to internship opportunities and commitments.

UKECharisma Director

What we want is someone who believes in the reasoning behind UKECharisma, as well as the neutral, efficient and friendly way we run our projects. You need to be good at management, good at speaking and presenting yourself to people, have a good command of English and Malay, have an idea about your home city in Malaysia, wherever it is, as well as Kuala Lumpur, and be able to spend the time to run the projects (being able to be present/available during the projects is essential). Don’t be afraid to apply for Director, because we welcome courage and look up to people who take risks and give things their best shot.

As the incoming Director, you will have the support and means of contacting the previous Director and Committee of UKECharisma for advice and support. We have reports of this year’s project, contacts, etc all sorted out for you already so you have minimal work to do in terms of running the project, because a precedence has already been established.

UKECharisma Assistant Director

We need somebody who has the ability to support the director throughout the year. The ideal candidate will also be able to help liaise with the UKEC main committee and help out with financial planning. The Assistant Director will also need to have the ability to directly contribute to the projects and provide the insight into how the projects and how UKECharisma should be run.

Additionally a willingness to be flexible in helping out with miscellaneous tasks or roles is crucial. Lastly, a genuine passion and dedication to the cause is of utmost importance.

UKECharisma Recruitment Director

For the recruitment director we need someone with a good command of Microsoft Excel and a reliable presence on the internet – to answer questions as well as confirm and organise applications and rejections, as well as sort out personal details of each volunteer, and making sure each volunteer has submitted all the details we need to contact them/verify their student status etc. You’ll need to compile and email various people, volunteers as well as universities, so a good command of English is the way to go for this position as well. Majority of the commitment of this position will happen during the school term rather than during the summer so make sure you are available during this period!

UKECharisma Publicity Director

The publicity director needs to be creative and preferably have some knowledge in photoshop, advertising and managing social media pages. You’ll need to update the webpage a lot, take photos/draw things, design the T shirts, as well as come up with publicity blurbs to send out to various universities/societies/forums. It sounds like a lot, but most of these things only need to be done once! For the rest of the project your role is to make sure the media is contacted about the projects, as well as make sure there are good photographic documentations of what is going on. If you come up with a design campaign, you can use the same design on the webpage, the T shirts, the flyers etc, so it’ll be a good start.

UKECharisma Welfare Director

The main role of the welfare division is to ensure safety and comfort of project participants throughout the course of their project. The welfare division will assist project participants with insurance and health and safety claims, as well as have a contact number or email address that will be given to team members to contact in case of emergency. The welfare team has to advise project leaders on setting rules for health and safety during the project. It is imperative that the Welfare Director and Assistant Director be able to be on hand during the projects to provide the necessary support and assistance to the project participants, so if commitment is an issue please rethink applying for this position.

UKECharisma IT Director (IT)

We are looking for a candidate who is able to execute highly technical tasks. The IT Director will be in charge of  developing and maintaining our website. A good candidate will have skills in programming, website developing, Adobe Creative Suite (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign).

UKECharisma Malaysian Liason Officer

This position is open for those who are studying in Malaysia. We welcome anyone from any university in Malaysia. Since the projects are organized in Malaysia, your duty as a Malaysian Liason Officer is to help facilitate and also establish communications in Malaysia. You will be working closely with the Director of UKECharisma.

If you are interested in any of these roles, please send to ukecharisma@gmail.com your CV and a cover letter detailing why you want to join UKECharisma and what skills you have that will make you useful to the team, and why we should select you. Please include the role you are applying for in the subject of the email that you send in this format:

UKECharisma Committee Recruitment 2013/14 : Position , Name

Application closes at 11.59pm 22 October. Shortlisted candidates will be emailed and interviewed.

Thank you and good luck.

UKECharisma. Lead. Live. Learn.

Letter from the Director

Leave a comment Standard

2012/13 was a very unusual academic year for me. It was my first year studying in the UK, which was bumpy and rough to say the least. However, despite all that have happened, it was also the year which I was blessed to be appointed as the director of UKECharisma 2012/13.

Happy as I was, it didn’t take long to daunt upon me that this job comes with great responsibility and of course, a whole lot of work. It was the first time I was personally given such a huge task but thankfully with good guidance from the previous committee, especially Ms Sharifah Shahirah the ex-director, who navigated and guided me from the planning of the projects to the managing of the team, I was able to execute the various projects successfully. Besides, I was blessed with an extremely competent, dedicated, and hardworking team, which I would like to extend my gratitude to them at this juncture – namely my assistant director Nadira Zaiman, publicity director Charmaine Tew, recruitment director Lai Shen Yi, welfare director Cheong E von, and assistant welfare director Eryse Seth – for if not for them, UKECharisma would not have sailed through its third year so smoothly.

However, as important as the executive committee is, its role is only to facilitate the projects rather than to implement them. The success of the projects is ultimately dependent on the efforts of volunteers, the committed and passionate volunteers whom we were fortunate to have. This year’s volunteers, or more affectionately dubbed as “Charismen”, did not only display tremendous leadership, creativity and dedication but also showed sincere passion and love towards education and the children. This passion translated into heart-warming patience and hard work, which included planning programs and workshops until past midnight, staying up till the wee hours (3am!) to build a “ship” for treasure hunt the following day, ending up with no voice at the last day of the programme and so on. These would not have happened, and surely, the projects would not have been as successful, if not for such passion from the volunteers, which again, I can’t be more grateful.

My experience serving UKECharisma has been a life-changing one, and certainly one which I will treasure. While our mission was to inspire all the children that we met, we were, at the same time, inspired by them. All these children were innocent and easily shaped by the people and culture around them. We have to constantly remind ourselves to watch our actions as well as remain energetic so that we do not disappoint their keen interest to learn. Also, the two weeks in Sabah and Kuala Lumpur respectively was personally a liberating experience for me, an escapism from the hectic city life and a retreat from internet and social media. It allowed me to reflect on the simplicity of life and reposition myself for the future. It reminded me to appreciate the simple things that we tend to take for granted, such as electricity and clean water, and also that there are many people out there who need help and we must always be willing to serve and give back whenever we can. Spiritually, it was therapeutic. From being solely focused on achieving academic success to getting a good job and climbing the corporate ladder, I now see a greater purpose in life, and view my future with a different perspective, for I now wish to give back as much as possible because of the fulfillment it provides.

Lastly, my wish is that many more in the world would notice what UKECharisma does, and decide to be part of it. Not only because there is a lot more help that is needed, but I too promise the experience will be enriching and life-changing. Similarly I encourage those who are passionate about this cause, to apply to be part of the committee next year. While I cannot deny that it will not be easy, I can assure you that it will be worth it.

“Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.” – Scott Adams

This quote is especially true when it comes to education, for the children who are inspired by your actions, your kindness and generosity, will remember and aspire to do the same, to their peers and juniors. They will be inspired to inspire, and this wave of selfless love, will pass on, making a difference in many lives. Charismen, we don’t die, we multiply.

Lots of UKECharisma Love,

Louis Liaw

All Set for Summer 2013!

We’ve finalised our volunteer recruitment, secured approval from the Ministry of Education and completed fundraising. Yes, we’re finally ready for summer 2013!

This year, 8 student volunteers together with 2 members from the committee will be heading to the village of Kampung Teringai in Kota Marudu, Sabah for two weeks (1 – 14 July) and teaching in a local school, as well as improving health awareness of people around the village.

Also, from the 15th of July until 28th of July, another group of 16 student volunteers will be teaching English at SK Sri Setia, Kuala Lumpur.

We would like to extend our appreciation to those who applied to volunteer with us. Congratulations if you’ve been chosen for the projects and to those who have not been selected, we believe you’re still amongst the ones with great potential and will continue to inspire people around you. We will be having other community service and education projects from time to time this summer, so do keep a lookout!

Till then, have a great summer break! More updates to come after the projects are carried out :)

1. Project Education KL, 15-28 July 2013 (KL)

Now in its 3rd year, you will be given the freedom to come up with creative, educational ways to re-introduce English to these wee students in a fun and interactive manner. Some of the activities last year include role-playing, a treasure hunt around the school, and outdoor I-spy sessions. There’s more to Education than teaching them English though. Inspiring and equipping them with a sense of self-worth is crucial to leave a lasting impact – much longer than the all-too-short 2 weeks you’ll be spending. When school ends, you’ll find yourself surrounded by like-minded individuals, and over the course of the project, strong bonds will be forged, and perspectives traded between you.  If you have a passion for education and a heart for the future generation, this is definitely the project for you.

“Inspiring others is what keeps them going when you’re not around”

 – Liyana, Volunteer for Education KL 2012.

2. Project Teringai (Sabah), 1-14 July 2013

Amidst well-preserved natural surroundings, the community of Teringai has managed to learn to live alongside nature. However, the downside to this is the physical exclusion they face, due to the remoteness of the village’s location. The Teringai Project aims to create a bridge to the outside world, through education, health awareness, and art. You’ll appreciate how much this means to the children once you learn about the trek they make from home to the learning centre. A volunteer explains: Accessibility to healthcare is extremely limited. The nearest hospital is in Kota Marudu, which is 1 hour away. There were no health clinics around.

Here’s a chance to leave a lasting impact, and the rare opportunity to experience Malaysia’s rich, unspoiled wonders.

“It also showed on how we take for granted the simpler things in life and how complex we have become as a modern society.”

- Loges, Volunteer for Teringai Sabah 2012.

Find out more about Project Teringai here.

* As Sabah is located in East Malaysia, volunteers are expected to pay for their flight tickets from West Malaysia to Kota Kinabalu. From then on, transportation will be provided by us from the airport to the village.

If you’ve been deliberating and are still unsure, I can assure you that you will not regret this decision. So come and join us and be a Charisman!
